First ALOFT in the UK
Environmental assessment and rating system for buildings
June 2010 - October 2011
Aloft London Excel is the only hotel in ExCeL London directly connected to the ExCeL International Convention Centre. Located right next to the Prince Regent DLR station, we’re minutes away from London City Airport, Canary Wharf and from the O2 Arena. Breeze into one of our 252 loft-like rooms, including 12 savvy suites and 19 accessible rooms.
The opening of Aloft London Excel is an exciting moment for the practice. The building continues our challenge to the accepted norms of hotel design through the integration of the theatre of materials and activity where the architecture and interior design become one holistic treatment. The hotel learly enhances the experience of the location to create an iconic sense of place at this important entrance to the International Conference Centre, so vital to the future of London.

One of the most fascinating elements of this project in our role as Design and Build contractor was to help Starwood and the owner to create a brand identity for the UK market because this is the first Aloft in the UK. Aloft is already present in the US and the Middle East. But the brand had to be interpreted to suit the UK market. We are delighted that the end result from our design team has been so warmly received.
Conor Feeney was Site Manager for McAleer & Rushe and had been working on the site, which McAleer & Rushe took charge of in June 2010. Works commenced in the first week of June. He told Premier Construction that it had been ‘a very interesting site to work on,’ and explained the stages of the build, which has been run on an impressive sixty-eight week schedule.
