Prior to beginning my employment with McAleer & Rushe, I studied a degree in ‘Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying.’
I completed my placement year with McAleer & Rushe, based in head office with weekly travel to London working on a number of prestigious residential and hotel projects.
I returned to McAleer & Rushe in 2016 as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor and I am currently working on two Student Accommodation projects for Queens University which consist of over 1200 bedrooms.
Working between head office and onsite has allowed me to develop my commercial experience in the procurement and payment of subcontractors along with onsite monitoring of works.
As a graduate, I have been assigned an experienced Senior QS as a mentor to work along with to help me develop my knowledge and gain more confidence before I am assigned to oversee my own project.
Whilst working with my mentor I have been made responsible for a number of key aspects of the construction phase.
My main tasks involve the procurement of all major packages such as façade elements, reinforced concrete frames, internal partitions and finishes.
This involves reviewing tenders in terms of checking quantities and comparing the competitiveness of subcontractor rates. Following on from the appointment of subcontractors I am also responsible for a number of subcontractor payments such as brickwork, reinforced concrete frame, joinery and others.
This involves assessing the subcontractors claims, putting payments on our internal payment software and reviewing and agreeing variations
and additional works with them.
After being heavily involved in the construction phases during my time with McAleer & Rushe, I have now started to work on future projects which
are at the tender and planning stage, with the aim to overseeing my own project in the new year. I firmly believe that the experience and knowledge
that I have learnt from McAleer & Rushe during my employment has given me a great opportunity to continue to develop as a Quantity Surveyor within the Construction Industry.
